Sister Mary Joy Langdon is a member of the Infant Jesus Sisters, a religious congregation founded in 1662 by Father Nicolas Barré to improve the lives of children through education and compassion.
In 1976, she became Britain’s first operational female firefighter, a milestone that reflected her quiet determination to serve.
In 1989, she founded the Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, a charity that supports children through therapeutic horsemanship, which she led for more than three decades.
Today, Sister Mary Joy serves as lead coach for the British Horse Society’s Changing Lives Through Horses programme at Shardeloes Farm Equestrian Centre, helping young people to build confidence, discipline, and self-belief through their connection with horses.
A keen gardener, vegetarian, and poet, she finds inspiration in the natural world and hopes her journey encourages others to live with courage, compassion, and gratitude.
